A new treatment for coronavirus infection (Corona 19) is expected to be approved within this year. It is expected that Korona 19 treatment will be introduced in Korea around next year.
According to the pharmaceutical industry on the 7th, U.S.-based global pharmaceutical companies Huizawa Merck (MSD) have begun clinical trials of Corona 19. Corona19 oral medicine is made in the form of an edible drug, such as Tamiflu, well known as a flu remedy, and is expected to be convenient and effective.
The place where the fastest clinical trials are currently underway is Merck.Merck is conducting a study on the effectiveness of preventing the infection of the "Molnupiravir," a candidate substance for Corona 19. Merck is conducting a global three-phase clinical trial of 1,550 adults and is expected to produce results in the fourth quarter of this year. It will apply to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval as early as October.
The Molnupiravir, developed by Merck, is inserted into the RNA of the Corona 19 virus and works in a way that prevents it from functioning properly by causing errors in the process of virus replication. Antibody treatments are attached to the bumps (spike) of the Corona 19 virus to prevent the virus from entering the body itself, but Molnupiravir is a method of preventing the virus from spreading to the body.
Hua said phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of "PF-07321332," a candidate substance for oral treatment, will be carried out. The clinical trial will be conducted on 1,140 adult patients who have been confirmed to have corona 19 but have not been hospitalized and are not seriously at risk.
Earlier in July, Hua started PF-07321332 clinical trials for patients who are at high risk of serious diseases due to underlying diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure among adults infected with Corona 19. The interim results of the clinical trial are due out sometime next month. Hua plans to apply to FDA for emergency use approval in the fourth quarter of this year. In addition, the Corona 19 Oral Treatment, under development by U.S. bio firm Athena Pharmacultics with Switzerland's Roche, entered clinical third phase in April and is awaiting approval.
The government also said that it secured 18,000 people's budget through this year's extra budget to introduce the Corona 19 oral treatment, and reflected the total budget of 38,000 people, including 20,000 next year. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention allocated 16.8 billion won out of its budget to purchase corona 19 treatments in the second supplementary budget this year. Next year's budget will be 41.7 billion won for the purchase of Corona 19 treatments, including oral treatments. The oral cure that the government is pushing for is Molnupirabir.
With the continued emergence of various corona mutant viruses such as Delta and Mu from India, the need to introduce treatments has grown following the vaccine, the only weapon of Corona 19. Rather than expecting an end to Corona 19, "with" Corona, who lives with the virus, is being discussed. Meanwhile, Korean pharmaceutical and bio companies are also continuing to develop while global pharmaceutical companies are developing treatments. In Korea, five pharmaceutical companies, including Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co. and United Pharmaceutical Co., are developing oral corona 19 treatments.
